XP to Win7 error "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation"
When attempting to connect from an XP machine to my Win7 machine, I get the error. "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation" I can connect from a Vista machine to the Win7 machine with no issue. I can also connect with XP to the Vista machine with no issue. The Win7 machine has an account with the same name/password as used for the login to the XP machine. Disabling the Win7 firewall has no effect. What am I doing wrong here?MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Hard to believe that nobody here is using XP and connecting to a Win7 machine. :-)MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Is the network set to Home or Work? If it's Home try setting it to Work.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Did you remove the Windows 7 machine from the HOMEGROUP? Can you connect from Windows 7 to Windows XP?

I've tried putting Win7 in the HOME, WORK, and none homegroups, no change. I can connect fine with Windows 7 to XP or Vista, and I can connect from both Vista machines to Win7, but the XP machine fails in every case. I've turned off password protected sharing, still no change. Turned off the Windows 7 firewall, still no change. BTW, what's the difference between HOME and WORK groups, they seem the same to me. Either XP simply can't talk to Win7, or I'm missing something pretty basic. :-) MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

It works when both are domain joined. I don't have any non-domain joined win7 installs to test right now.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Resolved, there was some other major system corruption on C:, I restored a backup and I'm back in the game. I wondered why the wheels fall off like that. Now all I have to do is figure out what got hosed out of nowhere and took me down, that doesn't inspire confidence! :-( MVP - Windows Desktop Experience
